Craig Charles Q: The album’s been re-mastered how does it sound now compared to how it did, back in the day?

Lara Logic A: Way better, it sounds amazing. The re-master is just, super crisp and sparkling and clean, certainly to my ears it sounds way better with the technology that’s available now. It sounds like magic, really great.

The Tiger Lillies - Shock Headed Peter

I want to extend our thanks to Ben Shepherd for their exceptional work on mastering the album Shockheaded Peter for vinyl, edition. This project, composed for the show and recognised with two Olivier Awards for The Tiger Lillies, was a special and intricate piece. Your expertise has truly elevated the recording, capturing the raw energy and theatrical essence of the album. The vinyl sounds rich, balanced, and immersive. It’s been a pleasure working with you

- Martyna Lach, The Tiger Lillies

"I love working with Ben, who professionalism and willingness to help shines through everything he does. He has mastered several releases on my label, Precious Recordings of London, including the very first releases five years ago, when frankly I didn’t have a clue what I was doing.

It could almost go without saying that he did a great job – but the crucial thing for me was that the artists involved, who had every reason to question my own competence, were falling over themselves to say how much they appreciated his work.

These songs sounded brighter than they had ever done yet retained the authenticity of the original radio broadcasts – an important concept for us as we release mainly BBC sessions. Moreover, even when he hasn’t done the mastering, Ben has provided a much-needed sounding board for any aural or technical issues with regard to any of our releases – and we’re now up to 60! I cannot recommend his services highly enough.”

- Nick Godfrey, founder of Precious Recordings of London

People have actually taken the time to message me to say how good it sounds (which never happens) - and you've taken what were watery thin masters and given them the fightpop chunk that have absolutely made that vinyl sing. Honestly could not be happier. You've done an incredible job, and people have noticed.”

The Odds - Foolish Men

"I’d hunted around for someone who would take great care over the vinyl mastering of The Odds’ long-awaited album.  It was over 40 years since the band last played together but the interest was still there from followers and genre enthusiasts alike. I had been working, for a couple of years, to restore studio and live tapes.  I had utilised stem and instrument separation software to enable me to remix all of our known, precious recordings.  I have been in and around music as a recording artist since the late 1970s (lately getting involved in mixing) and had already completed all of the digital mastering of the album for the various online platforms. The groundwork completed; we were ready to go to press with Detour Records. Having spoken with a few vinyl mastering engineers,

I discovered Ben through DMS and having spoken at length with him, understood his own history and credentials, and having been pointed at articles and other resources on vinyl mastering by him, I decided to trust him with the job.  Several weeks and iterations later and the files were complete and sent off to the record company.  The results didn’t disappoint he brought the disparate recording studios and live venue recordings into one coherent piece that comes to life off the turntable.

He’s easy to work with, professional and a good laugh.  The Odds are glad to have his name on the album credits.  I’m happy to recommend him.

AMBERHOURS - THEIR PERIL

"Mastered by Ben Shepherd in late 2021, ‘Their Peril’ was somewhat unconventional in terms of the dynamic range and original EQ of its constituent sounds: there was a lot of scope to mess this album up badly, if its mixes weren’t treated with kid gloves. Fortunately, a twenty-minute telephone conversation with Ben, prior to a two-hour mastering session which I did not attend, was all that was required to create a CD master with which I was more than happy. Having commissioned at least five other mastering engineers over the previous two decades – both as an amateur solo artist and as a member of several hobbyist bands –, I can confirm that Ben’s work is careful and considered.” - Crispin Lee, AmberHours
